This guide will work for most of our pour over brewers, as they all use the same brewing process. Pour over coffee extracts most of the flavors of the coffee but without the heavy body notes of a french press. Because we use stainless steel filters instead of paper you get the added benefit of all the essential oils that are naturally found in coffee.

Step 1: Measuring

The most flexible part of coffee making, and arguably the one that affects the taste most. For a medium strength coffee, you should measure out 1.75 tablespoons per (5oz) coffee cup. If you’re using whole beans it will be about 8.75 gram. Check our calculator for more details.

Tip: The best grind for a drip coffee would be a medium grind about the texture of sea salt. Use a burr grinder for the best results.

Step 2: Warming (optional)

This step is optional but helps to get the right temperature coffee. Place the carafe in a microwave for a couple of seconds. Additionally, you can boil double the amount of water you plan on using and pour half into the carafe, through the cone, let sit for a minute and then spill.

Tip: Optimal brewing temperature is about 195°F-200°F.

Step 3: Blooming

This is by far the most overlooked step in coffee brewing. Spoon your ground coffee into the filter (give it a little shake to flatten it out). Then gently pour twice the amount of water that you have coffee – for example, 40 grams of water if you have 20 grams of coffee. This will make your coffee expand a process called blooming, releasing the most desirable flavors from the grounds. Let sit for about 30 seconds.

Tip: Use filtered water for the best tasting coffee.

Step 4: Pouring

Continue pouring, slowly, delicately into the center of the grounds. Use a circular, or gentle back and forth motion. Be careful not to pour too much water at once, the coffee grounds should never swim.

Tip: Each (5oz.) cup of coffee should take approximately a minute and a half to brew.

Step 5: Discard the grounds

Once the coffee finishes brewing take out the filter and throw out the used grounds.

Tip: To ensure long lasting results, clean the filter out with water immediately after use. If you see that the holes are starting to get clogged, wash with a mixture of water and baking soda. After many uses, the filter can get clogged and the brewing time slows down, try using our Osaka Cleaning Solution for best results.

Step 6: Finally – Enjoy your coffee

Just pour into your favorite mug and enjoy the best tasting coffee you ever had.

Tip: Drink your coffee within a half-hour of brewing, even though you can microwave the “Osaka” carafe it is never the same.
